Bhawani Persaud
Bhawani is a social work graduate with a passion for anti-oppressive practice and supporting marginalized and racialized individuals and communities, with a particular interest in working with second-generation immigrants and their families. She is deeply interested in the ways creative writing can serve as a means of healing, connection, liberation, and resistance. Bhawani is the compiler of this is us: A collection of poetry from racialized second-generation youth, an anthology bringing together poetry from second-generation youth across Ontario and highlighting their diverse yet shared experiences of identity, culture, and belonging. She is currently pursuing her MSW and exploring innovative ways to foster community, connection, and healing through community-building and creative expression.
Second Gen
Second Gen is a first-of-its-kind grassroots organization dedicated to creating supportive and accessible spaces for second-generation racialized immigrants, particularly youth, to explore and express their experiences related to identity, culture, migration, belonging, mental health, and intergenerational relationships. Through creative writing, storytelling, community engagement, and meaningful dialogue, we strive to reduce isolation, foster collective understanding, and build a strong sense of community among individuals with shared lived experiences. By amplifying diverse voices and experiences, Second Gen creates opportunities for connection, self-expression, and belonging.

Le fonctionnement du projet
Second Gen is a grassroots organization dedicated to creating a welcoming and supportive community for racialized second-generation immigrants. The initiative fosters awareness, dialogue, and connection through social media, its blog, writing and community events, and the this is us poetry publication series. Currently in its early stages of development, Second Gen is intended to grow into a long-term community initiative that creates meaningful opportunities for connection, storytelling, and collective dialogue among racialized second-generation immigrants.

Second Gen aims to create greater connection, belonging, and visibility for racialized second-generation immigrants by providing spaces to share experiences, explore identity, and build community. Through storytelling, creative writing, dialogue, and community programming, the initiative seeks to challenge feelings of isolation and create opportunities for individuals to see their experiences reflected and valued. In the long term, Second Gen hopes to build a sustained and accessible community where second-generation immigrants can connect with others who share similar experiences, engage in meaningful conversations about culture and identity, and use creative expression as a tool for healing, empowerment, and collective understanding.
