Sonika Kumari

Sonika is a social innovator, researcher, and gender equity advocate. She has noticed a gap in lack of programming for South Asian and Black women focused on networking, culture, arts and wellness. As a young community leader within Peel region, she is excited to launch her grassroots organization to empower and inspire young women of colour. She hopes to continue to build fun programming for Sherni while also establishing resoruces and mentoship supports to help the community.

Sherni: Empowering Girls in the Peel Region

Project Sherni was founded by immigrant South Asian sisters, Sonika and Preety Kumari, who grew up in environments where women often had limited voice, choice, and opportunities to lead. Coming from a collectivist culture, they witnessed many girls lose their sense of community and belonging while trying to navigate new environments. They envisioned Sherni as a space to rebuild that connection — a community where women of colour in the Peel region could celebrate their voices, embrace their heritage, and grow in confidence.
