Wareesha Khan

I'm Wareesha, and at 16, I’ve realized that most of what we call "youth advocacy" is just being asked to cheer for someone else’s agenda. We are often infantilized, expected to fundraise for causes without being told where the money goes or how the systems actually work. I’m tired of being told that my role is just to be "the future," I want to be an architect of the present. My work focuses on two things: stripping away the corporate pinkwashing that exploits patient stories for profit, and giving youth the tools to move beyond performative participation. I believe in replacing empty awareness with real, gritty, hand-delivered support for metastatic patients, proving that youth can—and should—be the ones holding the system accountable.

Threads of Strength

Threads of Strength is an advocacy-driven social enterprise that puts the spotlight on metastatic cancer and the reality of pinkwashing. We host youth-led workshops where we tackle the issue of corporate greed in cancer branding head-on. During these events, students come together to handcraft bracelets and assemble care packages, which we then deliver directly to patients in local hospitals. We’re combining education with real, tangible support to make sure patients feel seen and heard.

      Le fonctionnement du projet

      We run events that serve two purposes: education and action. First, we teach participants about the reality of cancer pinkwashing and how corporate interests often overshadow patient needs. Then, we pivot to hands-on work—making bracelets and care packages. The bracelets serve as symbols of our mission, while the care packages go straight to patients in local hospitals. It’s a direct, community-centered way to turn frustration into actual help.

      By educating our peers on the flaws in current cancer advocacy, we’re creating a more informed generation of donors and leaders. The direct impact is felt in local hospitals through the care packages we deliver, providing comfort to patients who are often ignored by big campaigns. We’re shifting the focus from "awareness" to accountability, proving that youth can lead effective, ethical support systems.

      Our mission is to call out the performative side of cancer advocacy while providing direct, human-centered support to metastatic patients. We aim to educate youth on the dangers of pinkwashing and corporate greed, empowering them to use their own hands and voices to fight for a version of advocacy that actually prioritizes patients over profits.

      Threads of Strength is led by me, Wareesha Khan, alongside a group of student volunteers who are ready to do the work. We don't operate in a vacuum—we work closely with metastatic cancer patients to make sure that our events and the care packages we send are actually what the community needs. They keep us grounded and ensure our mission stays focused on the people, not the hype.
