Alicia Diaz Pappas

Granby, QC

Alicia Diaz-Pappas is a 28-year-old gardener, sewist, artist, and nature lover. As a young community leader, I’m passionate about creating spaces where people can connect and feel a sense of community while honouring the environment. With a background in food security and community development, I’ve led initiatives that promote equitable food access and support local engagement. My work is centred on connecting with nature, connecting with others, and connecting with food that nourishes.

Community Garden and food skills workshops

Community Garden and Food Skills Workshops is a project that fosters community connection, access to land, and access to affordable fresh food through gardening and food skills and environmental workshops. The garden will have individual plots, a shared growing space, and all the necessary tools. Workshops will teach food skills like planning a garden, composting, and attracting pollinators. By bringing people together to learn, share, and grow, the project supports stronger local relationships and promotes food sovereignty.

About this Project

Communities Served

My project will involve and/or impact the following communities:

    United Nations Sustainable Development Goals

When it comes to community impact projects, the UN has created 17 Sustainable Development Goals. These are the Sustainable Development Goals associated with my project.

      How the project works

Once we secure land we will begin building the garden with a team of volunteers. This will be done in Fall 2025. Two workshops (garden planning and planting garlic) will be given before January, and gardeners will register for plots. The first growing season will be next summer, after the project "end" date.

      Project Impact

We hope to reach 50 people with our project through volunteers for garden set-up, registered gardeners, and workshops participants. The impact we aim to make is to increase accessibility to land, increase food skills knowledge, increase people's sense of food autonomy, and create a strong sense of community. We hope to collaborate with local organizations, aiming for long-lasting relationships.

      Project Mission

Our mission is to create an accessible community garden that empowers residents to grow their own food, increase access to fresh and affordable produce, and foster connection, learning, and resilience through shared land, workshops, and community-building activities.

      Project Team

We're a small team of community connectors, gardeners, and an agronome!
