Almustafa Abbas
Mustafa Abbas is a social policy advocate working across climate action, refugee protection, and democratic governance. Growing up in Sudan under authoritarian rule, he became politically active during the 2018 Revolution, co-founding a youth-led political movement that mobilized for freedom, peace, and justice. That experience shaped his commitment to social democracy and the belief that strong public institutions must protect rights and expand opportunity for all. After arriving in Canada as a refugee, Mustafa continued his advocacy within and beyond the Canadian Council for Refugees, contributing to coordinated national efforts to strengthen protection pathways and advance newcomer youth leadership. He has worked on biodiversity and climate policy with Nature Canada, advised Global Affairs Canada on the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, and served as a Youth Delegate on Canada’s delegation at COP29. Through grassroots organizing and institutional policy engagement, Mustafa works to advance inclusive, evidence-based progressive change in Canada and globally.
A Journey to Safety
A Journey to Safety: Understanding the Asylum Seeker Experience is a short film that explores the journey of an asylum seeker seeking safety in Canada. Through storytelling, the project aims to increase public awareness and understanding of the challenges faced by people seeking protection. The film will encourage empathy, challenge misconceptions, and promote meaningful conversations about refugee protection and Canada's responsibility to provide safety and dignity to those seeking refuge.

How the project works
The project will involve research, story development, filming, editing, promotion, and community engagement. Over the project period, the team will produce a 5–10-minute short film, organize a screening or community discussion, and share the film with wider audiences to encourage learning and dialogue.
Project Impact
The project will increase awareness of the asylum-seeking experience and the importance of refugee protection. It aims to reach at least 100 people through screenings and online sharing, encouraging greater empathy, reducing misconceptions, and creating meaningful conversations about the experiences and rights of people seeking safety.

The project's mission is to use storytelling and film to increase understanding of asylum seekers and refugee protection. Its goals are to produce an accessible short film, engage at least 100 community members, encourage informed discussion, and promote empathy, dignity, and greater awareness of Canada's responsibility toward people seeking protection.
