Ariam Haddis

Ariam Haddis is a young community leader based in Edmonton, Alberta, passionate about creating spaces where youth can explore identity, creativity, culture, and belonging. Through community projects like Roots & Rituals and Oranges Under the Fig Tree, she uses art, storytelling, wellness, and hands-on learning to help young people feel more connected to themselves and each other. Her work is rooted in curiosity, cultural care, and the belief that youth deserve spaces where they can try new things without pressure to be perfect.

Oranges Under the Fig Tree

Oranges Under the Fig Tree is a five-chapter youth fellowship that creates a free third space for creativity, reflection, and community. Inspired by Sylvia Plath’s fig tree metaphor and Wendy Cope’s poem “The Orange,” the project invites young people to explore different parts of themselves through journaling, herbalism, baking, upcycling, zine-making, and meaningful conversations about identity, wellness, consent, sustainability, and belonging.

About this Project

Communities Served

My project will involve and/or impact the following communities:

    United Nations Sustainable Development Goals

When it comes to community impact projects, the UN has created 17 Sustainable Development Goals. These are the Sustainable Development Goals associated with my project.

      How the project works

Oranges Under the Fig Tree runs through five chapters: journaling, cultural wellness, baking and crafting, upcycling, and community dialogue. Participants receive a Fig Journal, complete hands-on activities, reflect after each chapter, and end by creating a zine or community manifesto.

      Project Impact

The project helps youth build belonging, confidence, creativity, and community connection. Participants gain hands-on skills, explore different parts of themselves, reflect on their goals, and experience a welcoming third space where they can begin new interests without pressure to be perfect.

      Project Mission

The mission of Oranges Under the Fig Tree is to help youth move from “I wish” to “I started.” Through creative workshops, reflection, cultural learning, sustainability, and community conversations, the project encourages young people to explore many possible versions of themselves.

      Project Team

Our team comes from different educational, cultural, and creative backgrounds, but what brings us together is a shared love of learning, curiosity, and introducing one another to new parts of life. Among us is a chef and recipe developer; a computer scientist and statistician who is a gifted researcher and avid reader; a mathematician who is secretly a musician; a future lawyer and gifted herbalist; a psychologist who is also a multidisciplinary artist and polyglot; an analyst deeply interested in fitness and sound production; and me — a career counsellor by trade and a lifelong collector of hobbies. Together, we represent the heart of Oranges Under the Fig Tree: people with many interests, many stories, and a shared desire to keep exploring.
