Fatima Janneh
Montreal, QCMy name is Fatima Janneh and I am a bioengineering student at McGill University. Since a young age I have been a passionate community leader. As a #RisingYouth alumni, I co-founded the Winnipeg Black Renaissance, which is a nonprofit that supports Black entrepreneurs and artists through community-building and advocacy. I am now a Sprout Fellow and I am the founding member of a project named the Beauty and Babes Engineering Society (BABES) where I serve as the Vice President of Development. Through this project I help grow BABES into a platform where students can learn, experiment, and lead in cosmetic science. My leadership style centers on collaboration, inclusivity, and empowering others to realize their potential. Through my various roles, I strive to build spaces where diverse voices are heard and where innovation and community growth go hand in hand.
Beauty and Business Engineering Society
I’m a founding member of BABES, a student-led club that stands for Beauty and Business Engineering Society which is focused on bringing cosmetic science to the forefront of innovation on campus. My project empowers students to research, develop, and formulate beauty products from scratch, combining science, creativity, and entrepreneurship. While other university design teams focus on electric vehicles or mechanical engineering, BABES gives space to those passionate about cosmetic science and product design. Through hands-on lab work, workshops, and community engagement, we’re not just making cosmetics, we’re building scientific literacy, leadership skills, and a future where students can lead in cosmetic innovation. Our goal is to launch student-developed products, compete in design competitions, and one day, sell them right on campus.

About this Project
Communities Served
My project will involve and/or impact the following communities:

United Nations Sustainable Development Goals
When it comes to community impact projects, the UN has created 17 Sustainable Development Goals. These are the Sustainable Development Goals associated with my project.
How the project works
BABES will develop, test, and launch a student-formulated cosmetic product. Activities include lab experiments, product design feedback sessions, and a soft launch sale. The project combines science, creativity, and entrepreneurship while fostering innovation and representation in cosmetic chemistry.

Project Impact
BABES addresses the lack of cosmetic science in educational spaces by providing hands-on opportunities for students to research, formulate, and launch beauty products. The project empowers underrepresented voices in STEM, promotes innovation and sustainability, and fosters leadership through inclusive, student-led exploration of science, creativity, and entrepreneurship.
Project Mission
BABES aims to bridge the gap between cosmetic science and traditional STEM education by empowering students to explore beauty formulation through research, lab work, and entrepreneurship. Our goals include finalizing a student-developed product, hosting feedback workshops, and launching campus sales, all while promoting diversity, innovation, and hands-on learning in an often-overlooked scientific field.
