Hido Mohamed

I'm a fourth year Political Science and Communications student at the University of Ottawa with a strong interest in public policy, community engagement and advocacy. Through my different experiences I've developed experience in policy research as well as supporting community focused initiatives. I'm passionate about creating spaces where community experiences can inform meaningful policy discussions and contribute to practical change. Through this fellowship, I'm learning to develop my leadership skills while working to improve awareness and access to disability supports for families and caregivers.

Bridging the Gap: Improving Disability Support Access for Families Through Community Discussions and Policy Ideas

Bridging the Gap is a community focused project that brings together families, caregivers, community organizations, researchers and policymakers to discuss barriers to accessing disability supports. Through community conversations, interviews and a panel event, the project will highlight lived experiences, identify gaps in existing supports, and explore practical solutions. This project aims to strengthen dialogue between families and decision makers and contribute to more accessible and responsive disability support systems.

About this Project

Communities Served

My project will involve and/or impact the following communities:

    United Nations Sustainable Development Goals

When it comes to community impact projects, the UN has created 17 Sustainable Development Goals. These are the Sustainable Development Goals associated with my project.

      How the project works

The project will start with interviews with families and caregivers to learn about their experiences accessing disability supports. These experiences will help shape a panel discussion with community organizations, researchers, and policymakers. After the event, the main ideas and recommendations discussed will be shared in a short report.

      Project Impact

It will help raise awareness of the challenges families face when accessing disability supports and also give caregivers a space to share their experiences. By bringing all these people together, the project will aim to encourage better communication and identify ways to make this issue more accessible and responsive.

      Project Mission

The mission is to give families the platform to share their experiences directly with policymakers, researchers, and community organizations they may not normally have the opportunity to speak with. The goal is to create meaningful conversations, strengthen connections and make sure families experiences are heard by those who can help create change.

      Project Team

Led by me, but will have support from community partners, families etc
