Kristine Lorzano

Kristine is a community leader with a background in social service work and early childhood education, driven by a simple belief: connection shouldn’t break the bank. In 2021, she started Broke Girl Toronto on social media, now What’s Her Budget, to help people discover hacks and free and low-cost things to do in the city. Wanting to be more involved in her community, she received a flyer from a local arts organization that led to one of her first community grants, the #RisingYouth grant by TakingItGlobal. It funded a virtual movie night with Uber Eats gift cards, where everyone watched The Pursuit of Happyness together, apart. Since then, Kristine has brought people together through a free Repair Café, community photoshoots, and virtual paint nights. She believes in resilience, discovery, and thinking outside the box!

YAP Hotline

The YAP Hotline came about from its founder’s personal experience with loneliness in her 20s, often at the end of the day and missing the days when it was easy to talk to friends when they had time. As life gets busier, it can be harder to find quality time for fun, genuine conversations. That’s where the YAP Hotline comes in, with a mission to make genuine human connection accessible and fun, one phone call at a time.

About this Project

Communities Served

My project will involve and/or impact the following communities:

    United Nations Sustainable Development Goals

When it comes to community impact projects, the UN has created 17 Sustainable Development Goals. These are the Sustainable Development Goals associated with my project.

      How the project works

The YAP Hotline will operate on select evenings, allowing callers to book a 10-minute slot and choose from topics they want to yap about with our “topics of interest” expert. With the Sprouts Fellowship Grant, we project our free hotline will launch in late October 2026 and run through January 2027.

      Project Impact

The YAP Hotline is a free community phone hotline offering genuine one-on-one conversations between callers and passionate expert on shared interests. In a world of endless scrolling and surface-level connection, we create space for fun, meaningful conversation. Our pilot serves adults 18+ worldwide, helping reduce social isolation, foster connection, and brighten someone’s day.

      Project Mission

The YAP Hotline’s mission is to make genuine human connection accessible and fun, one phone call at a time. Our goal is to have callers leave feeling fulfilled, happier, less lonely, and having made their day, whether through a laugh or a smile. We aim for 20+ calls by January 2027, while receiving feedback that highlights the need for and enjoyment of the YAP Hotline.

      Project Team

I'm currently a one-person team, fueled by supporting communities, creativity, meaningful connections, and fun!
