Mursal Tahiri
Mursal Tahiri was born and raised in Toronto, Ontario, and has always been passionate about giving back to her homeland, Afghanistan, and the community she calls home. Growing up as the daughter of immigrant parents in a country filled with opportunity, Mursal developed a deep appreciation for the sacrifices her parents made and the importance of giving back. Her upbringing shaped her commitment to community service and creating opportunities for others. Through her involvement in community initiatives, Mursal strives to support youth, women, and girls. She believes that change begins with individuals who are willing to serve, uplift others, and use their opportunities to make a lasting difference in their communities and beyond. Through her work, Mursal hopes to inspire others to give back and create a brighter future.

How the project works
The project will begin with planning, developing competition materials, and recruiting volunteers/judges. In October, outreach and promotion will take place to encourage Afghan children to register and participate. In November, the competition will be held, giving participants an opportunity to test their mathematical knowledge, problem-solving, and critical-thinking skills in a fun and supportive environment. The project will conclude with participant recognition, feedback collection, and an evaluation of the competition to help improve future editions.
Project Impact
Math Stars Competition 2026 will empower Afghan children by increasing engagement in mathematics and strengthening problem-solving, critical-thinking, and teamwork skills. Through a supportive competitive environment, participants will gain confidence, recognize their potential, and develop a stronger interest in education. The initiative will inspire children to pursue academic opportunities and contribute positively to their communities and future.
