Sitra Suleiman

Scarborough, ON

Sitra Suleiman has always enjoyed helping others, whether it was through volunteer work, work, school, or friends. She is interested in sustainability, food and discovering and learning new holistic approaches to problems. Sitra started Community Food Hub as a way to make a positive impact in her community.

Community Food Hub

Community Food Hub is on a mission to decrease food insecurity and avoidable food waste by setting-up outdoor community fridges and pantries across Scarborough. Previously, we had one fridge and pantry in operation and through this project, we set up a second fridge and pantry in July 2023. We operate in Scarborough and depend on donations.

About this Project

Communities Served

My project will involve and/or impact the following communities:

  • Multi-barrier populations

United Nations Sustainable Development Goals

When it comes to community impact projects, the UN has created 17 Sustainable Development Goals. These are the Sustainable Development Goals associated with my project.

  • SDG 2: Zero hunger
  • SDG 1: No poverty
  • SDG 10: Reduced inequalities

How the project works

We built and provided a tangible resource, our second 24/7 outdoor community fridge and pantry, for people to support each other by taking what they need and leaving what they can. We also built long-term partnerships for consistent replenishment of the fridge and pantry.

Project Impact

The outdoor community fridge and pantry provided a low-barrier service to decrease food insecurity, which in turn helped decrease hunger, poverty, and reduce inequalities. People in the community were appreciative of the service and support. This project impacted the community in a unique way as it is a resource for those who are facing food insecurity, but also allowed community members to directly support each other by donating, volunteering and spreading awareness of the resource. As a grassroots initiative we depend on the community to keep the fridge and pantry replenished. Opening a second location allowed us to support more people in a different area.

Project Mission

Decrease food insecurity and avoidable food waste in Scarborough by setting up 24/7 outdoor community fridges and pantries. We also want to foster community helping each others to ensure all have access to culturally appropriate food.

Project Team

The team has a group of volunteers to support with fridge check-in, food pick-up and drop-offs, and community outreach
